MTN Boosts Gulu City Marathon with Shs20m Sponsorship

The marathon, being organised under the theme, “Running for Culture and Heritage,” aims to showcase Gulu City’s cultural richness while raising funds for the Dero Kwan Initiative, a program supporting education in Northern Uganda.

Gulu City – MTN Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering community development and cultural celebration by contributing Shs20 million to support the inaugural Gulu City Marathon, scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 7.

The marathon, being organised under the theme, “Running for Culture and Heritage,” aims to showcase Gulu City’s cultural richness while raising funds for the Dero Kwan Initiative, a program supporting education in Northern Uganda.

Participants will compete in races covering 5km, 10km, 21km, and 42km, running through iconic landmarks such as the Gulu War Memorial and Gulu City Main Market.

The announcement was made during a handover ceremony at Jaca Gardens in Gulu, where MTN Uganda’s Northern Region Marketing Coordinator, Denis Harindimana, presented the contribution to the event organizers, the Great North Run Company.

Harindimana highlighted MTN’s dedication to initiatives that empower communities, promote cultural heritage, and support education.

He noted that the Gulu City Marathon embodies MTN’s belief that “together, we are unstoppable,” uniting people from diverse backgrounds to celebrate culture and create transformative impacts in the region.

As part of its sponsorship, MTN Uganda has introduced an exclusive 50% discount on marathon kits for the first 100 participants who purchase using MTN MoMo.

Kits are available for Shs30,000 instead of Shs60,000 by using Merchant Code 735488.

Fionah Latiga Lamaro of the Great North Run Company expressed gratitude for MTN’s generous contribution, describing it as a vital boost to the success of the event.

She acknowledged the partnership as a step toward celebrating heritage while providing educational opportunities in Northern Uganda.

The Gulu City Marathon is expected to become an annual event held every second Saturday of December.

MTN Uganda’s support aligns with its mission to empower communities, celebrate diversity, and contribute to Uganda’s socio-economic development.
