Private Ameny Bonny, 32, of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), has been sentenced to death by the 5th Infantry Division Field Court Martial for multiple murders in Paimol, Agago District.
The court, chaired by Colonel Peter Musherere, convicted Ameny on three counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, one of abduction, and one of desertion.
The crimes took place on October 20, after Ameny deserted his post at Pakondong Detach, armed and in search of his wife, Betty Ogom.
In a fit of rage, he killed three people, injured two others, and abducted a local resident while attempting to track down his wife and her suspected lover.
During the trial, Ameny pleaded guilty, citing frustration over his wife’s disappearance and a Shs16.5 million loan he had given her.
Despite expressing remorse and having a previously clean record, the prosecution stressed the gravity of his actions, which had devastating effects on the families and community.
Colonel David Opeero, Deputy Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, praised the community for their cooperation in the investigation and reiterated the UPDF’s commitment to accountability.
He urged soldiers to seek lawful channels for resolving disputes to avoid conflicts with civilians.
