Beware flu kills – WHO shares vital prevention tips

Health

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the alarm over the global impact of influenza, highlighting its potential severity. According to WHO, flu cases can range from mild to fatal, with annual fatalities estimated between 290,000 and 650,000 globally.

This stark reminder comes as flu season looms, with experts emphasising the importance of preventive measures to curb the spread of this potentially life-threatening illness.

WHO’s official statement urges communities to prioritise vaccination, stating, “Get the flu shot.” Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and your loved ones against flu complications.

In addition to vaccination, WHO recommends several behavioural changes to reduce the risk of transmission. These include covering coughs and sneezes with a bent elbow or tissue, disposing of used tissues in a closed bin, and regularly washing hands to maintain hygiene.

A practical tip provided by WHO is to stay home when feeling unwell and to wear a mask if experiencing mild flu symptoms and needing to leave home.

WHO also emphasises the importance of creating well-ventilated environments, advising people to “open windows when possible to encourage air flow.” These strategies aim to minimize exposure and ensure safer interactions.

With flu impacting millions every year, WHO underscores the importance of avoiding close contact with sick individuals and refraining from touching the eyes, nose, and mouth to reduce the risk of infection.

“Protect yourself and your loved ones and #KeepFluAway,” the organisation urges, reinforcing the need for vigilance.

These reminders resonate strongly, emphasising the collective responsibility in preventing the spread of this seasonal virus. Public health experts continue to advocate for simple yet powerful preventive measures to save lives and ease the burden on healthcare systems.
