Albertine Region Police Spokesperson Julius Hakiza confirmed the attack, stating that the depot manager, Irumba Maulana, reported the matter to authorities.
Police in Hoima are investigating a robbery at the Nile Agro Depot in Kiryatete, a suburb of Hoima City, where unknown assailants stole a firearm from a private security guard.
The incident occurred at 2:30 a.m. when masked attackers overpowered Felix Ebongo, a guard from Express Security Company Limited, and made off with his gun.
Albertine Region Police Spokesperson Julius Hakiza confirmed the attack, stating that the depot manager, Irumba Maulana, reported the matter to authorities.
“The attackers, wearing masks, disarmed the guard and fled with the gun. CCTV footage from the premises will be reviewed to determine the details,” Hakiza said.
Hakiza urged private security firms to reconsider their deployment strategies, warning against assigning lone guards to sensitive locations.
“The rise in attacks on private security guards is alarming. Companies must prioritize safety by deploying multiple personnel, especially in high-risk areas. As police, we will also enhance foot and motorized patrols to address this issue,” he emphasized.
The attack comes amid increasing violence targeting security personnel. Earlier this week, two guards from Sovereign Security Company Limited were killed in Kiryandongo during an attack on Shines Energy Fuel Station.
The assailants stole cash and other valuables yet to be fully accounted for.
Authorities are calling on private security companies to strengthen measures to protect their employees and the premises they guard, while police intensify efforts to combat the growing wave of crime in the region.
