The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has launched a nationwide blood donation campaign to address the persistent blood shortages in hospitals, particularly during the festive season.
This initiative, part of UBA’s corporate social responsibility efforts, aims to bolster blood supplies in preparation for the surge in accidents and emergencies typically experienced during this time of year.
The campaign was inaugurated at UBA’s headquarters in Kampala and will run until the end of December, extending to various regions where the bank operates.
UBA is mobilizing its employees, clients, and the public to contribute to this life-saving cause, ensuring hospitals are better equipped to meet the increased demand for blood.
Speaking at the launch, Mustapha Sebaggala Kigozi, Chairman of the Board of Directors at UBA, highlighted the significance of the initiative.
“As a responsible corporate entity, we understand the critical role blood plays in saving lives. This campaign is our way of giving back to the community and standing with healthcare institutions during a time when demand for blood is at its peak,” Kigozi said.
Hoziana Niyonsaba, Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications at UBA, also encouraged the public to participate.
“One pint of blood can save up to three lives. We call upon everyone to take part in this noble cause, as it is a small effort with a big impact,” she said.
The first phase of the campaign, launched in Kampala, witnessed strong participation from UBA employees, customers, and members of the public.
In the coming days, the campaign will expand to other regions, fostering greater community engagement and amplifying its impact.
Blood shortages in hospitals are a recurring challenge, especially during the festive season, when road accidents and emergencies increase.
Health officials have stressed the importance of timely blood donations in saving lives and alleviating pressure on the healthcare system.
UBA’s campaign demonstrates its commitment to community welfare and support for healthcare beyond its financial services.
The bank has partnered with Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS) to ensure the initiative’s success and to encourage other stakeholders to prioritize similar causes.
Through this campaign, UBA aims to collect significant quantities of blood—targeting approximately 200 donors per day—making the festive season a time of giving and hope for those in need.
